Formation of a Jewish Women's Charitable Society in San Francisco, 1855
Description
Letter from Cauffman H. Meyer to Reverend Isaac Leeser, written in San Francisco on September 5, 1855. Meyer informs Leeser that Dr. Eckman paid him for *The Occident*, requests acknowledgement of the payment, and notes that books shipped via the *Snap Dragon* have not yet arrived. He also describes the formation of a charitable society by Jewish women in San Francisco, including the first meeting at Mr. Jacob Rich's house, with Mrs. Abm. Tandler as president and Mrs. Rich as secretary, and a subsequent meeting at the Congregation of Emanu-El synagogue on August 5th. The letter mentions the proximity of the Jewish holidays and the writer's ability to readily dispose of the books upon their arrival.
