J. C. Mott to Isaac Leeser on the Pentateuch and Race, December 29, 1850
Description
Letter from J. C. Mott to Isaac Leeser discussing Mott's brochures and their differing views on the authenticity of the Pentateuch. Mott defends his position citing Gesenius, De Wette, Eichhorn, Munk, and Cohen, and mentions recent Egyptian discoveries that challenge the traditional view. He also discusses the chronology and genealogies of the Hebrew text, and expresses regret for a mistake made by the printer in a previous publication. The letter also touches on racial unity and the incompatibility of Genesis with the chronology and evidence of distinct races found in the 3rd and 4th Egyptian dynasties. Finally, Mott comments briefly on critiques of his work by Smyth, Howes, and Bachman, noting the latter's refutation by Agassiz and Morton.
