Jacques Judah Lyons, Hazan of a congregation in Paramaribo, to read the Sabbath prayers. Leeser explains that this is a courtesy, not an assertion of congregational power to compel the Hazan to admit others. A second, shorter note, possibly enclosed with the first, expresses Allen's displeasure at receiving Leeser's explanation.
